DJ Anthony Hornof spun vinyl from 1984 to 1990 in New York City nightclubs such as Save the Robots, M.K., Peggy Sue's, and The Plex. Uptown, he rocked Thursday nights (the peak night) as the resident DJ at The Plex in the Columbia University student union. Downtown, he learned from legends such as David Mancuso, Larry Levan, and Frankie Knuckles. Anthony deejayed private parties in Soho lofts, in the Empire State Building, on yachts, and for the 10-year reunion of the High School of the Performing Arts (the "Fame" school).
The NYC nightclub scene of the 1980s created the foundation for the current international club and rave scene, and Anthony was a part of it. The underground dance music from this era was also foundational, and Anthony spun the original tracks that are now routinely sampled in contemporary electronic dance music (EDM).
Anthony plays transformative R&B, disco, and house. Recent mixes at https://www.mixcloud.com/hornof/ illustrate his sound and flexibility. Anthony still has his vinyl but embraces digital DJ technology that permits real-time remixes that would be impossible to achieve with vinyl. Anthony appreciates high-end audiophile sound, and has been fortunate to experience the emotional enlightenment that can occur when listening to high-end sound systems such as David Mancuso's system at The Loft. He curates his digital tracks for optimal sound.
Anthony has also done radio. He was the Chief Announcer at Billboard-reporting WCBN-FM, Ann Arbor, from 1996-1997. In this role, Anthony trained and supported new disc jockeys. His freeform "Smokin' Vinyl" (vinyl only) radio show was praised in the July 1997 Ann Arbor Current magazine. He assisted the station engineer in troubleshooting the broadcast system by simply reporting subtle changes that he could hear in the on-air sound. At WCBN, Anthony deepened his understanding of the interactions between musical genres through individualized study with the legendary Arwulf Arwulf.
Anthony has recently rekindled his nightclub deejaying past and is now performing at events in and around Eugene, Oregon.
